An innovative development is happening behind the scenes here at the shop. We've been so enthralled with it, that it seems in our excitement...we forgot to tell you about it!
Around here we're always looking for ways to create a positive impact all while solving a problem. You might guess that crafting our wooden utensils creates a significant amount of sawdust, and for years we've been searching for a better way to deal with it. We have given it away to people making compost, used it to make soft beds for horses, given it to local goat ranchers to get rid of mud, and simply thrown a lot of it away because no one wants as much as we make. Well, we are delighted to say we've found a very cool solution that solves all of our problems! Meet our new briquette maker.
Your may already know that we use any scrap wood possible to make pen blanks. This greatly reduces the amount of wood we need to throw away. These little blanks are used to make wooden pens mostly. They are only 3/4" x 3/4" x 5" long so we NEVER throw any wood away that is bigger than that. Pen Blanks are available on Amazon.
That's a great start... but what about all of that dust?
This impressive machine takes all our sawdust and transforms it into small, compact briquettes. These briquettes are an excellent eco-friendly option for fueling campfires, Solo Stoves, and cozy indoor fires and is transforming what was once waste into a useful product. It's a win-win.
And there's more good news. I've been playing around with the machine, and it's running like a well-oiled, uh, briquetter! The process is fine-tuned and it now runs seamlessly, filling multiple bags of briquettes at once. It spins on its own, so the bags fill evenly and once they're full, they are removed, zip-tied, and ready for locals to pickup and burn in campfires in the summer and heat their houses in the winter. It even shuts itself off when empty!
Check out the following video explaining what the machine does and how it does it.
